Let's explore some red lights that could signal a fear of intimacy, discover what healthy intimacy looks like, and look at how personal coaching can get you there.

Fear of Intimacy Signs

1. Commitment Issues - Individuals who have problems taking relationships to the next level - be it marriage or just committing to monogamy - may have a fear of intimacy that requires personal coaching and counseling. If your partner has a history of serial dating, broken engagements, or always being the one who did the breaking up in past relationships, be concerned.

2. Sexual Problems - Sexual problems are common in individuals who have a fear of intimacy. Sex is the most intimate act between two people and this is one of the main areas where fear of intimacy shows itself. Male sexual problems such as impotence or erectile dysfunction can sometimes be triggered by a fear of intimacy. Women who cannot reach orgasm or have other sexual problems may also have a fear of intimacy.

3. Casual Sex - Individuals who have multiple sexual partners or have a history of one night stands may be jumping from partner to partner because of a fear of intimacy. Casual sex feels safe for someone who has commitment issues because emotions are generally not involved in these types of situations. The individual with a fear of intimacy is "safe" because they can get out before an emotional connection is made.

4. Drama Queens and Kings - Many individuals who have a fear of intimacy become drama kings or queens. They purposefully or subconsciously create problems and fights in a relationship to keep their partner at a distance. Oftentimes these fights will be triggered when the relationship seems to be on the right track or an emotional bond is being formed. Instigating fights is a way that drama queens and kings protect themselves from letting their partner get too close.

Fear of Intimacy Versus Healthy Intimacy

Healthy intimacy is a mutual trust and closeness in a relationship. Healthy intimacy is an emotional, intellectual, spiritual and sexual connection with your spouse or partner. Sexual problems and commitment issues are not a part of healthy intimacy. Game playing and constant fighting are also not signs of healthy intimacy. Reaching healthy intimacy is sometimes a long journey, and requires personal coaching and counseling to achieve.

Getting Help: Personal Coaching for Fear of Intimacy

A fear of intimacy oftentimes stems from one's upbringing and the ideas ingrained in them as they formed opinions about relationships and themselves growing up. These commitment issues and "emotional baggage" oftentimes requires the help of a professional Relationship Coach to sort through.

Individuals who have a fear of intimacy typically bring the same problems with them into every relationship they encounter. Without personal coaching and counseling, the commitment issues, sexual problems and emotional trauma that surface from a fear of intimacy will not be resolved.
